Why Does My Onan Generator Crank But Not Start?

Cranking and starting are two different events. Knowing which one you actually have narrows the diagnosis considerably.

Cranking is not starting

Cranking means the starter is engaging and physically spinning the engine. Starting means the engine catches and continues running on its own.

If you hear the engine turning over, the battery, starter and control command to crank are at least partly working. What is missing is one of the ingredients combustion requires: fuel, spark or compression at the right time — or a control system that is deliberately preventing the engine from running.

The symptom narrows the diagnostic path; it does not automatically identify the failed component.

Fuel delivery

Fuel problems are the most common cause we find on generators that crank without starting, particularly on units that have been sitting.

Fuel supply and pickup

RV generators typically draw from the coach fuel tank through a dedicated pickup that sits above the bottom of the tank so the generator cannot run the tank dry. A gauge showing fuel is not proof the generator has fuel available.

Fuel pump

The pump may not be running, may not be producing adequate delivery, or may be deteriorating internally. All three present differently and are worth distinguishing before parts are ordered — see our page on fuel-pump and carburetor contamination.

Fuel filter and lines

A restricted filter, a collapsed line, or a leak that lets the pump draw air can all starve the engine.

Carburetor

On carbureted units, blocked jets or a stuck needle and seat prevent the correct amount of fuel from reaching the cylinder. This is extremely common after long storage.

Old gasoline

Fuel that has degraded can be difficult to ignite and can leave deposits behind in the metering circuits.

Ignition and spark

On spark-ignited models, an engine that cranks with fuel present but never fires points toward the ignition side: plugs, plug wires, coils, or the ignition control circuit.

Spark plugs are consumable. Fouled, worn or fuel-soaked plugs are a routine finding, especially after repeated failed start attempts.

Battery and cranking speed

An engine can crank and still crank too slowly to start. Weak batteries, corroded terminals, poor grounds and undersized or degraded cables all reduce cranking speed.

Some Onan controllers monitor cranking speed and will set a fault if it falls below what the control expects, which is one reason a battery problem can present as a control fault.

Safety and shutdown circuits

Generators are designed to refuse to run under conditions that could damage the engine — low oil level or pressure being the common one. If a protection circuit is active, or a sensor or switch in that circuit has failed, the engine may crank and never be allowed to start.

These circuits exist for a reason. Diagnosing them means testing them, not bypassing them.

Control system and fault codes

The generator's controller manages cranking, fuel, ignition and shutdown. It can also store fault information that tells you what the controller observed during the failed start.

That information is genuinely useful, but a code reports an observation, not a diagnosis. A code indicating the engine stopped unexpectedly, for example, does not tell you which system caused it — see our page on Onan fault code 36.

How this is actually diagnosed

The order matters. Confirm cranking speed and battery condition, retrieve any available fault information, then verify whether fuel and spark are present before replacing anything. That sequence takes a fraction of the time that replacing parts in the hope of a fix does — and it costs less.

Generator diagnosis can involve fuel, high temperatures, electrical power, and carbon-monoxide hazards. If you're not equipped to perform the testing safely, have the generator professionally diagnosed.

Why does my Onan generator crank but not start?
The engine is turning over but is missing fuel, spark, adequate cranking speed, or is being held off by a safety or control circuit. Fuel delivery and carburetor problems are the most common findings, especially after storage.
Should I keep cranking the generator?
No. Extended cranking can overheat the starter, drain the battery, and flood the engine with fuel that fouls the spark plugs, which adds a second problem on top of the first.
