Why a Failed RV Generator Fuel Pump Can Require Carburetor Replacement
If we quoted a fuel pump and a carburetor on the same repair, this page explains the reasoning — and when only the pump is actually needed.
The fuel system works in sequence
Fuel does not arrive at the engine all at once. It moves through the system in a fixed order, and every component downstream is exposed to whatever the components upstream send along.
The pump sits upstream of the carburetor. That single fact drives most of the repair decisions on this page: anything shed inside the pump is carried in the direction the fuel is already moving — toward the carburetor and the engine.
Fuel moves in one direction. Material shed inside a deteriorating fuel pump is carried downstream into the carburetor, where passages are small enough that tiny particles change how the engine runs.
Why RV generator fuel pumps deteriorate
Generator fuel pumps live in a hard environment. They sit in or near a closed compartment, cycle hot and cold repeatedly, vibrate every hour the generator runs, and then sit unused for months at a time.
Contributing factors we commonly see include:
- Heat and elevated generator-compartment temperatures
- Age and total hours on the pump
- Long periods of storage with fuel left in the system
- Ethanol-blended fuel and its effect on some materials
- Gasoline that has degraded and formed varnish or gum
- Repeated heat cycles between operation and shutdown
- Vibration during normal running
- Moisture and condensation inside the fuel system
- Normal deterioration of internal seals, diaphragms and elastomers
Not every pump fails the same way. Some fail purely electrically and never contaminate anything. Others show internal deterioration, and the fuel carries that material downstream. Which one you have is a diagnostic finding, not an assumption.
Why the carburetor is the vulnerable component
A carburetor is a precision fuel-metering device. Inside a small aluminum casting there are jets, calibrated orifices, drilled passages, emulsion circuits, a needle and seat, and a float assembly. Several of those passages are smaller in diameter than a sewing pin.
That is why very small amounts of debris matter here and nowhere else in the fuel path. A particle that passes harmlessly through a fuel line can partially block a metering circuit and change how the engine runs.
Contamination in a carburetor can produce any of the following:
- No-start
- Hard starting
- Surging or hunting RPM
- Running only with the choke applied
- Flooding
- Lean running
- Rich running
- Stalling shortly after start
- Shutdown when a load is applied
- Intermittent symptoms that come and go
Why cleaning isn't always the best repair
A carburetor with ordinary varnish from old fuel is a different situation than a carburetor that may have received material from a deteriorating pump upstream.
Cleaning is a legitimate repair, and sometimes it is the right one. The difficulty is verification. Once passages are that small and that numerous, confirming that every circuit is completely clear — including the ones you cannot see into — is not always practical in the field.
When significant contamination is found, replacing the carburetor assembly removes the uncertainty and generally produces a more predictable result. That is a judgement made from what the diagnosis actually shows, not a blanket rule.
Why replacing only the carburetor can also be a mistake
The reverse error is just as expensive. If a pump is actively deteriorating and it stays in the system, a brand-new carburetor is installed directly downstream of the source of the problem. The same symptoms can return.
The fuel pump removes the source of the problem. The carburetor replacement removes contamination that may already have traveled downstream.

- Does every failed RV generator fuel pump require a new carburetor?
- No. Diagnosis matters. A purely electrical pump failure is a different situation than a pump showing internal deterioration or contamination. Only the second case puts the carburetor at risk.
- Can you clean an RV generator carburetor instead of replacing it?
- Sometimes, yes. Cleaning can be appropriate when the issue is ordinary varnish from stale fuel. Replacement may be preferable when contamination or internal deterioration makes it difficult to verify that every small passage is truly clear.
- Can an Onan generator still run with a contaminated carburetor?
- Often it can, which is what makes the problem confusing. Partial restrictions tend to produce intermittent behavior — it starts one day and not the next, it runs unloaded but stumbles under load, or it only runs with the choke applied.
- Why does the generator surge?
- Surging is commonly associated with improper fuel metering, which a restriction or a fuel-delivery problem can contribute to. Surging has multiple possible causes, so it points toward the fuel and governing systems rather than identifying a single failed part.
- Does old gasoline damage RV generator carburetors?
- Gasoline degrades over time and can leave gum and varnish behind in small passages. How much damage that causes depends on the fuel, the storage time, and the conditions, so it is a common contributing factor rather than a guaranteed outcome.
