Starting Problems

Why Does My Onan Generator Start and Then Shut Off?

A generator that runs briefly and quits is telling you something different than one that never starts at all — and the timing of the shutdown is a real clue.

How long it runs matters

A unit that fires for two or three seconds and dies usually had just enough fuel in the carburetor bowl to run on and nothing sustaining it. A unit that runs for several minutes and then shuts down is more often reacting to a condition that develops as the engine warms up or as a protection circuit reacts.

Note the timing before you call. It genuinely shortens the diagnosis.

Fuel starvation

The most common cause of a start-then-die is fuel that reaches the engine to start it but is not replenished fast enough to keep it running.

  • Fuel pump not delivering adequately once running demand begins
  • Restricted fuel filter or line
  • Air entering the fuel system through a leak on the suction side
  • Fuel pickup or supply problems from the coach tank

Carburetor problems

A carburetor with blocked main circuits can often deliver enough fuel to start on the choke and then fail to sustain the engine once the choke opens. Running only with the choke held is a related version of the same complaint.

This pattern is common after long storage — see RV generator carburetor problems and what happens when a generator sits.

Protective shutdowns and fault detection

Generators are built to shut themselves down rather than damage the engine. Low oil level or pressure, high engine temperature, and out-of-range electrical output are all conditions that can stop a running unit deliberately.

When a controller shuts a unit down, it often stores fault information. Retrieving it is one of the first things worth doing. A stored fault indicating the engine stopped without a stop command — code 36 on many controllers — is common with this complaint.

Shutdown systems protect the engine. Diagnosing them means testing the circuit and the condition it's reporting, not bypassing the protection to keep the unit running.

Control circuits and electrical output

Loose connections, corroded grounds, failing switches and controller-side faults can all interrupt a running generator. Output-side faults can also trigger a shutdown even when the engine itself is running correctly.

Load-related shutdown

If the unit only dies when something is switched on, the problem is load-related rather than a simple start problem. That is covered in detail on our page about generators that die under load.

What to check before you call

Two safe things are worth confirming: the engine oil level, and whether the fuel is fresh or has been in the tank for months. Both are frequent contributors, both are free to check, and both change what we bring.

Generator diagnosis can involve fuel, high temperatures, electrical power, and carbon-monoxide hazards. If you're not equipped to perform the testing safely, have the generator professionally diagnosed.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Onan generator start and then shut off after a few seconds?
Most often the engine starts on fuel already in the carburetor and then isn't resupplied — a fuel delivery or carburetor metering problem. Protective shutdowns and control faults are the other common categories.
Could low oil cause my generator to shut off?
Yes. Generators are designed to shut down on low oil level or pressure to protect the engine. Checking the oil level is a reasonable first step before any diagnosis.
Does a stored fault code tell me which part failed?
No. It tells you what the controller observed. That narrows where to test, but the failed component still has to be identified by diagnosis.
